Repoussé is a metalworking technique that creates a raised design on a metal surface by hammering from the reverse side. The word comes from the French word pousser, which means "to push forward".
Creating in repoussé is a simple way to create low relief sculpture by working in metal.
OBJECTIVES:
Students will learn about the artistic and historical significance of repoussé, chasing, and other metal working techniques.
Students will create a Bas Relief sculpture on aluminum foil.
Learning about lines Students can learn about different types of lines and how to incorporate them into their sculptures. They can also learn line vocabulary and techniques for drawing.
Understanding the difference between organic and geometric shapes Students can learn to identify and use a variety of both organic and geometric shapes.
Demonstrating knowledge of historical references Students can learn about the styles and functions of tin relief work from historical references and reflect that knowledge in their own work.
Demonstrating knowledge of design principles Students can learn about the principles of balance and repetition and apply them to their designs.
Learning sculptural concepts and techniques Students can learn about sculptural concepts and techniques related to bas relief.
WHAT TO DO:
In your sketchbook:
Create 3 different design for your foil relief
Choose designs that are suitable for the repoussé techniques, with clear, bold shapes and patterns.
Take a photo(s), create a pdf if more than photo, submit to Schoology
Once you have decided what design you want to create:
Grab a paper either in 9x12, 6x9 or 6x6.
Draw out your design with detail
Take a foil in the same size and tape the edges.
Transfer your image onto the metal sheet using a pencil.
Creating your low relief:
Use repoussé tools to shape the metal from the back, following your design
Start lightly to create the initial shapes and outlines in the artwork
gradually use more pressure to deepen the relief and refine details.
Periodically check your work by flipping the metal sheet to see the progress from the front.
When you have completed your relief:
Use black acrylic paint to paint over the repoussé artwork, then use paper towels to wipe off the black paint in areas of high relief. This will create an antique look.
Grab an appropriate size black paper.
Using a ruler, cut and opening to create a mat for your metal repoussé.
Tape your repoussé to the frame.
You will extend your designs from the metal repoussé to the frame using color pencils or oil pastels.
