Value Drawing from a  Still Life

WHAT IS VALUE?

Value is an element of art that refers to the lightness or darkness of a color, a fundamental element that creates the illusion of three-dimensionality, depth, and form in a flat artwork. Artists manipulate value through highlights and shadows to achieve a range from white to black, creating visual interest, conveying mood, and guiding the viewer's eye to focal points within a composition.

Picture

Value is also a concept in color, as mentioned above. Artists can create value in line drawings through different shading techniques which use different types of line. In painting, value in color is created by adding whites and blacks to a color to create different values and shades. Shading techniques create value in drawings and add dimension and perspective. These techniques include hatching, cross hatching, stippling, scumbling, stippling, and blending.

VALUE - TERMS

Value - Element of art associated with the darkness or lightness of a color
Light source - area in which light is originating from
Value scale - a guide to creating a range of value, good pieces of art have a full range of value Tints - light values - you add white to a color
Shades - dark values
Highlights - areas on an object where light is hitting
Shadows- areas on an object where light does not hit

LINE DRAWING TECHNIQUES:

Cross-hatching and hatching techniques elevate line drawing by creating depth, dimension, and texture through the arrangement of parallel and intersecting lines. These methods transform flat illustrations into visually compelling works that seem to leap off the page

Picture

Hatching:
Uses closely spaced parallel lines Denotes shading and creates a sense of light and dark Density of lines plays a crucial role in suggesting shadow or depth

Cross-Hatching: Employs intersecting sets of parallel lines Allows for greater control over shading intensity Particularly effective for adding depth and texture to complex subjects

IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK:

You will create….

Picture
Picture
1. Create a ten step value scale and a shaded three dimensional  circle. Then they will label their shaded circle with the different areas of value.  Use the diagram on the bottom to help you label the parts of a shaded object.  The circle you shade should have labeled the highlight, half tones, reflected light, occlusion shadow, core shadow, & terminator.  Use the pictures shown as a reference for what your study should look like.  You can use pencil or charcoal.

 2. You will shade a four step value scale using tonal, hatching, cross hatching, scrumble, stippling and smudge methods. Neatness and obvious changes in values with each technique will be scored. Use this chart to help you assess what method of shading will be best for the textures you see in your still life.

3. You will select 4 different shapes found on your table: cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, etc.. Divide your paper into 4 parts. Shade each to make them appear 3-dimensional. You can use the different shading techniques. Your drawings should contain a full range of values (from white, to middle grays, to black.) Label each drawing to show the light source, the highlight, the halftones(midtones), core shadow and cast shadow.

  • Draw in shapes using line.
  • Try to simplify shapes into easily recognizable geometric shapes.
  • Lightly sketch out the shapes so you can easily erase and adjust your lines.
  • "Clean-up" your drawing.
  • Erase any overlapping lines.
  • Go over your original light, sketchy lines with more defined lines.
  • LIGHTLY draw in marks indicating where major shadows or highlights are located.
  • Begin lightly shading in value.
  • Look for your light source, try to identify highlight areas, mid-tones, and core shadows.
  • Add in your cast shadows and tonal areas around your objects.
  • Go back to your objects and start darkening you shadow areas to increase the contrast.
  • Go back to your cast shadows and background areas and darken your shadow areas to increase contrast.
