OBJECTIVES: Students will understand and use bracketing on their cameras.
Students will understand and create a HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE photography using Adobe Photoshop.
WHAT IS HDR? High Dynamic Range, or HDR, is a digital photography technique whereby multiple exposures of the same scene are layered and merged using image editing software to create a more realistic image, or a dramatic effect. The combined exposures can display a wider range of tonal values than what the digital camera is capable of recording in a single image.
In the image below, you can see how 3 exposures where taken of the same scene (one underexposure, one normal exposure, and one overexposure) and then merged into one image. The final HDR image takes the best or most detailed part from each picture so that the final image has the greatest range of value and the most detail possible.
HOW TO DO IT....
SET UP YOUR CAMERA
SET UP AEB (AUTO EXPOSURE BRACKETING)
Select how much compensation to be used between each exposure.
Turn on continuous shooting mode.
Compose the scene and press the shutter release to make the exposures.
TIPS...
Exposure Mode: Manual
ISO: 100 or 200
Drive Mode: Continuous Shooting
USE A TRIPOD! Your camera can not move in between shots!
Make sure your subject is not moving. If your subject moves in between shots, you will get "ghosts" in your final image.
Good subject matter for HDR is a scene that has plenty of detail to capture in the darkest (shadow) areas as well as in the lightest (highlight) ares
TURN IN: You will turn in a digital contact sheet with 36 images. File folder with 36 images, 10 working, and Final 5. You will rename your files LASTNAME_HDR(file number). We will have a class critique on the prints to help you determine which compositions work best in regard to the elements and design principles and how to photograph your subject with more interesting viewpoints to attract viewers to your compositions.
WEBSITE UPLOAD TO YOUR WEBSITE YOUR 10 EDITED IMAGES AS A GALLERY.
SELECT YOUR BEST 5 images from your 10 edited and UPLOAD THESE 5 PHOTOS ARE YOUR FINAL FIVE AS A SLIDE SHOW.
WRITE A MINIMUM OF A 2 PARAGRAPH REFLECTION FOR YOUR ASSIGNMENT.
