Students learn to generate, sort, and develop ideas for content in their artwork.
Students learn to assemble and finish a lidded box-like form from slabs of clay half way between soft and leatherhard.
Build a frame of reference for the work of art by accomplished artists who have made similar work.
REQUIREMENTS:
Use slab or coil method to construct
Must have a hidden lid
Your lid must have a lip
Must have a foot
Height Requirement: 5"-6"
Must have a theme or texture or sgraffito
You can use red terracotta clay or white earthenware clay
Slabs should not be thinner than 1/4"
Create a cardboard template for slabs
WHAT TO DO:
Roll out your slab to 1/4″ – 3/8″ thick.
Lay templates on top of the clay and use a needle tool to cut them out.
Stack them with a piece of plastic wrap or paper between them. Put the template on top so you know which pieces is what!
Allow to harden to leather-hard.
Use the 4 S’s of Joining Clay to attach the pieces together
Add coils in the corners to strengthen the joints.
Smooth all the sides.
Use additive and subtractive techniques to add your theme elements to the 4 sides of your box.
LID: construct the lid by adding a coil on the bottom of the lid that fits inside the walls of the box. Add theme elements to the lid. You must add a handle that goes with your theme.
FEET: Don't forget to add feet to your box.
